Belonging | The Doctrine of Humanity

Break the ice. Would you rather live without heat and AC or live without social media?

Genesis 1:

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Discuss the fourth core, essential belief of Citizens Church: the doctrine of humanity.

  1. What does it mean for humanity to be made in the image of God?
  2. What are the five commands by God in verse 28? What does it mean to take dominion?
  3. Depravity distorts dignity and dominion. How does this affect how we see ourselves? How does sin affect you?
  4. Paul writes to Timothy, “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Timothy 1:5). If this is a goal of our instruction, how does understanding the doctrine of humanity better equip you to “love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith?”

Rest in God’s promises. God made humanity—male and female—in His own image (Gen. 1:27-30). Set apart as His image bearers, every human being is sacred. All men and all women, bearing the image of God, are meant to represent God in His creation (1 Cor. 10:31). God declares the created order to be very good, distinguishing men and women as His agents to care for, manage and govern over it. They enjoy equal access to God by faith in Christ Jesus and are both called to move beyond passive self indulgence to significant private and public engagement in family, church and civic life. .
