Wisdom & Wonder | Jesus & the Fools

Break the ice. Would you rather be an Olympic gold medallist or an astronaut for NASA?

Read the scripture passages below.

Proverbs 1:22 - “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

Proverbs 6:9 - How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?

John 1:14 - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Discuss the text. This week we amalgamate what we have learned about Wisdom over the last few weeks by looking at New Testament examples of each type of foolishness.

  • We know that each type needs Jesus. What did Jesus say to each type of fool?

                Martha: the stubborn

                Peter: the simple

The rich, young ruler: the sluggard

                Paul: the scoffer

  • Proverbs 1:9, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” When do you despise wisdom and instruction? In other words, generally speaking, what makes foolishness emerge and come out of you? (When you receive correction, have small surrenders in the wrong direction, are quick to quarrel or easy to offend?)
  • What do you want Jesus to say to you about the symptoms you see in yourself?
Home Group Focus: Fixed-hour prayer. Over the next month, we hope that you will create intentional moments throughout the day to stop and pray in order to be with your Father and capture his holy perspective in the various aspects of your day. So, the first step is to spend time this week paying attention to your experience of prayer. In what part of the day do you feel most distant or unaware of the presence of God? When is it hardest to be with God? Morning, Afternoon or Evening? What is it about that part of the day that makes prayer seem so difficult, impossible or even irrelevant? Consider adding some form of fixed-hour prayer to that part of your day, in a way that works for you. The hope of fixed-hour prayer is quite simple: being with God who is always with you.
