Wisdom & Wonder | Proverbs 31

Break the ice. What is a fun fact you know? (eg. El Capitan's iconic granite wall in Yosemite Valley is 2½ times as tall as the Empire State Building. Tom Brady has 7 Super Bowl rings.)

Read Proverbs 31 or invite someone in the group to provide a summary of the chapter.

Proverbs 31:1–9 contain the words of King Lemuel based on teaching he received from his mother about wise kingship. No one knows who Lemuel was or where he was king. Most suppose that he was not an Israelite. Proverbs 31:10–31 is set in the form of an acrostic, in which each verse begins with the successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Discuss the text.

  • What are some common misconceptions about Proverbs 31?
  • What form of foolishness do you notice more (in you) since we began this sermon series?
  • How is each type of foolishness countered in Proverbs 31? (How is the husband described contrary to the stubborn? The simple? The scoffer? The sluggard?)
  • How does understanding Jesus as being the truest fulfillment of Proverbs 31 affect how we relate to the poem?

Prayer Walking as a group, with a friend or individually. Pray for unsaved people in a specific place to be saved.

Pray for receptive hearts according Romans 3, trusting “the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Ask God to save the lost and to renew the joy of your own salvation as you walk.

Immediately afterwards – perhaps over a meal – gather to share your prayers, observations and experiences: What did you learn about the neighborhood? When was God’s presence especially apparent? What surprised you? What was difficult? What service opportunities and ministry might be needed here? With whom could you partner and go?
