Wisdom & Wonder | The Simple, The Scoffer and The Sluggard

Break the ice. You can visit any fictional time or place. What would you pick?

Read Proverbs 1:20-22 and Proverbs 6:6-11.

20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. 7 Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, 8 she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Discuss the text. There are four forms of foolishness in the book of Proverbs: the stubborn, the simple, the scoffer and the sluggard. Each caricature rejects the way of wisdom and chooses folly. It is hard to be right about the workings of our hearts if we are not using the right words to describe what is happening in our hearts. There can be sin that exists in our hearts that land in categories that don’t bother us and therefore lead us to a life of foolishness.

  1. Summarize each form of foolishness. How would you describe each?
  2. Part of being wise is acquiring skills to spot foolishness. Are you able to spot your foolishness? What are some adjustments to make that allow God to intervene?
  3. Wisdom has a posture (low), a pace (slow) and a person (Jesus Christ). Which area is hardest for you - the posture, the pace or the person? (arrogance/prideful, restless/impatient, self-reliant/effort)
  4. We all need a savior. What form of foolishness in your own heart needs more of the grace of God?

Prayer Walking as a group, with a friend or individually. Pray for the lost in a specific place to be saved. Pray for receptive hearts according to Jesus’ parable in Luke 8: “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and were trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The value of praying “on location” has to do with presence. You are in Christ, so your prayer walking provides light in dark places and salt in foul places (Matthew 5). Prayer walking is an act of worship and obedience. God wants to use your beautiful feet (Romans 10) to advance his kingdom. Ask God to save the lost and to renew the joy of your own salvation as you walk.
