Belonging Week 5: Living on Mission

Jill Barlow

October 10, 2021

Break the ice. What is your favorite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 and Matthew 28:16-20.

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Discuss the passages and the fifth value of Citizens Church: Living on Mission.

  • What is Jesus’ mission statement for the Church, and for you? What is included in “all that I have commanded you?”
  • What does Jesus’ authority have to do with making disciples? What difference does that authority make for the undertaking of making disciples?
  • If you think about the four areas in which we can live on mission, which one comes most naturally to you? Which one is most challenging?
  • If the most loving thing we can do for people is to share the gospel, how would you describe your faithfulness to the Great Commission and living on mission?

Close in prayer

Father, we ask you to change us by empowering us to live under the gracious rule of Jesus Christ, our authority and king. Every follower of Christ is called to live on mission for your kingdom, and we need your help. We ask that you use our words, gifts, stories and resources to be a light and to push back the darkness of this world. Would you give us opportunities this week to share our faith, love our neighbors, help the vulnerable, contend for justice and proclaim the gospel around us? We ask in Christ’s name and trust in the power of His Spirit. Amen.
