HOME GROUPS | As It Is

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

Colossians 3:23-24

This January, we have taught and remained in Matthew 5:13-16; that followers of Jesus are the salt of the earth and a light to the world. This affects every aspect of our life, including our view on those created in the image of God, how we pursue Jesus and others, and this week, how we approach our daily work.

Discuss the texts: In Matthew 5 teaches on being salt and light. As followers of Jesus, we enter daily into a workplace where we can exercise this truth as a people knowing that our inheritance comes not from men but our Lord Christ. A people whose work is transformed by this reality.

In what ways are we tempted to find our worth in our work? Have you felt or experienced this in the past week?

Read Colossians 3:23-24 together. How does Paul’s exhortation differ from how we think or are taught from others/the world in regards to work?

Ben Witherington defines work as, “Any necessary and meaningful task that God calls and gifts a person to do and which can be undertaken to the glory of God and for the edification and aid of human beings, being inspired by the Spirit and foreshadowing the realities of the new creation.” How do you see your work in light of this definition?

At the end of the sermon, Jamin read testimonies of how people in our church see their faith informing their work. How would you answer the same question? Maybe consider writing out your own answer in 2-3 sentences.

Encourage our church-wide practices. As a church, we are invited throughout this sermon series to engage in three practices: Morning Prayer, Evening Silence and Wednesday Fast. The practices are a way to become satisfied in God. May you abide in Jesus and access the presence of God this week. Amen.

Close in prayer: God our Father, we are Yours. Not only have you called us to You, but also to others. May we abide in You as we work. May we know that our inheritance You, Lord. May we serve you with joy.
