Though Deborah mothered Israel with strength and integrity, they once again returned to idolatry as quickly as her memory fades. The life under Midianite rule grows more oppressive, and thus Israel’s sin cycle grows more destructive. God calls a man named Gideon to deliver Israel, and in the process, gives Gideon (and us) insight into our deepest fears and greatest weaknesses, while showing Himself strong. (Judges 6–8)
