With almost no introduction, John cuts right to the meat of his argument in this letter. He sets up the dichotomy of light and darkness to help solidify the theme of discernment. Because God is light and anything that is in God is in the light, not the darkness, so too are we to pursue our call as children of the light. (1 John 1:5–2:2)
